The first tailgate party?
Tailgating is an American tradition that traces its roots back to the civil war. Some historians link the First Battle of Bull Run to our current tailgate party.
It was the U.S. Civil War’s first major battle and the curious traveled from Washington DC to Manassas, Virginia to cheer on their team, Union or Confederate.
Enjoying picnic baskets full of food, they cheered on their “team” from safe distances near the battle site. This is one of the first records in American history of people cheering at an event while sharing food and time with friends.
These fans ( and the men who were fighting) certainly braved more dangers than today’s tailgaters, but they did lay the groundwork for us.
